A MOMENTOUS PROJECT FOR EARTHBORN

07/07/2009

Market leaders Earthborn Paints were selected for one of the UK’s most prestigious projects to date, providing paint for the interior staircase of The Monument, London.  Completed by stonework and restoration specialists Cathedral Works Organisation Ltd in conjunction with Julian Harrap Architects, the £4.5 million restoration project saw the city’s memorial to The Great Fire of London completely cleaned and repaired.  Earthborn was awarded the paint contract for the project and its Silicate Masonry formulation was selected for use on the interior staircase of the building; the world’s tallest freestanding stone column at 202 feet tall.  Julian Harrap Architects selected Earthborn as the paint partner for this aspect of the project as the historic building is made of Portland stone and required a paint formulation sympathetic to a period property. As the interior staircase is fairly narrow and sees lots of visitors every day, the paint specified needed to be of the highest quality in order to withstand wear and tear and prevent erosion. Earthborn colour matched its formulation to the exact shade of the Portland stone, now aptly named ‘Monument grey’. A bespoke colour created for a unique project. John Dison, Managing Director for Earthborn comments, When it comes to painting period properties, modern paints and old buildings don’t mix. Historic buildings like The Monument have to be treated with a high performance product that will allow the building to breathe once applied.

Our Silicate Masonry Paint perfectly complemented the Portland stone used to construct The Monument because it is water based, VOC free, breathable and doesn’t discolour over time. Everyone at Earthborn is very honoured to have played a part in the restoration of such a prominent and much-loved London landmark.”
